Trying to pinpoint research area in France
I am fortunate that I am visiting France in May, I’m from Australia. I have been researching my family for over 20 years & I am at a standstill at my GG-GFather. I need some advice what area to visit (Department, civil registry or Town hall). My information for him, from a BC of one of his son’s is Charles SAILLEUR (there are various spellings of the surname) He was born in Calais, Bretagne, France circa 1843. Are you able to give me a starting point please? I would also like to go to the area & see where my family lived! This will be a once in a lifetime trip & I’m so excited!

Sounds like a great trip! One of the great things about research in France is that they have civil records on line by department. Calais is in the department Pas-de-Calais. Here is a link to Civil Registration records for that department:
Also helpful is that the French required 10 year alphabetized tables to be kept for civil records. So that is a good place to start looking. The page will probably come up in French, but if you are in Google Chrome, Google will translate the page to English for you.
I tried to do a search for the last name Sailleur in the ten-year tables for the years 1840 to 1845. See screen shot below:
I got no hits, but you said that there were various spellings for the name. You might try this same search with some of the alternate spellings that you are aware of, possibly broaden the years, etc.
Maybe other members of the community have other suggestions for you.

One other possibility that occurs to me. You might go to Family Search and request an on-line consultation, and you could get additional help in real time. You can schedule that through the "Free Research Consultation" button the FamilySearch Community home page

Thank you so much christopher, I have tried the online archives for Pas De Calais & came up with the same results…. I’m meticulously searching but he is very elusive!!!!
Unfortunately, I don’t know a more specific town other than Calais 🤷🏽♀️ It will be awesome to go to the general area to look around though!

Hello. I'm new to family history investigations, but i've been reading a lot. And I have some questions. You said your GGGFather's son was born on Calais, Bretagne. But Pas-de-Calais is at Hauts-de-France, not Bretagne.
I've just one record when looking for it at Filae. Does it make sense?

i have found this on genearmor.cotesdarmor.fr
in 1990, the name of the department has changed it was called "côtes du Nord", now it's "Côtes d'Armor"
and the departement of "Nord" is near "pas-de-calais" departement, not very far from Calais

Thank you both for that information, it certainly gives me another line of enquiry to investigate! I have returned from my trip overseas, our daughters arranged a very busy schedule for us! We went to the Calais area & it was absolutely beautiful.
