Beginning Research in Syria

I am trying to help someone with Research for the parents of someone who lived in Thea, outside of Damascus from 1887 to about 1905. Are there any research guides for this area? Are there any records in English. I assume not. Are there any guides to being able to read (or at least pick out names and dates) in Syrian records. Any help would be appreciated.
