Bas-Rhin records prior to 1710
Hello I am trying to research my Schaeffer/Schäffer line. I am trying to understand the history of the area in which my family comes from. The earliest record I have is a marriage record of my ancestor Philipp Schäffer to Catherina Mesmerin found in the
It wouldn't allow me to attach the link so I have written it out:
["Surbourg - Parish Registers (Before 1793) - Marriage register 1701-1731 - 3 E 487/8, (page 76 of digital document) off the bas-rhin archives website]
This area (Bas-Rhin) in the late 1600s/ early 1700s was fought over, and I am confused if it was considered a part of France during this time period. This is the earliest known record I have of my Schaeffer/Schäffer and I can't find anything prior to this with my family names. Does anyone know where I can find documents of the area Selz & Kesseldorf (Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France)? Could it be under Germany or the Roman Empire Possibly??
I am so confused on where to take my records to when there were so many changes to which country was over this area. Do I need to continue to research France records of the area in this time period, or try a main city accross the border in Germany perhaps? Hope this makes sense, thank you for any help!
