Working with PDF Files
“The Portable Document Format (PDF) was developed by Adobe in the 1990s to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and operating systems.” (Wikipedia)
Regardless of the source of the PDF files used, there are times when modifications are desired.
There is a free, open-source application that allows merging, splitting, extract pages, rotate and mix PDF files. It is available for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.
The product, “PDFsam Basic,” can be download from their website https://pdfsam.org. The following key features are available in the basic version:
· Merge - All (or part) of PDF files may be merged by selecting the files you wish to combine. To arrange the order of the files, use the buttons “Move Up” and “Move Down” or “Right Click” file for more options. To merge only part of a file, double click the “Page Ranges” cell and specify which pages to merge. Select a destination and click “Run.”
· Split - Select a file to rotate. There are three options for splitting in “Split Settings.” Make a split selection, select a destination, and click “Run.”
Split after - chose every page, even pages, or odd pages.
Split after the following page numbers - add a comma-separated list of page numbers.
Split by every “n” pages - Split(s) will occur after every “n” pages.
· Rotate - Select the file(s) to rotate. Rotate only part of a file by double-clicking the “Page Ranges” cell and specifying which pages to rotate. Select a destination and click “Run.”
· Extract - Select the file to use. Under settings, set which pages to extract from the selected file. Set them as comma-separated numbers or page ranges, for example, 2,5,6-13,25.
· Delete: - “PDFsam Basic” does not allow you to delete pages. A work-around will have the same effect. Use “Extract” selecting all pages to be kept.
