Where to continue research from here?
Would like to find birth record for "Periklis Vellios" (aka Peter Vellios) born 21 March 1888 at (Tripitsa, Tzeptiza, Terpetsa) Greece. FamilySearch Family Tree PID G9JH-Z9Q.
Most of this information comes from New York passenger list (see attached source in Family Tree) and Declaration of Intent (Ancestry, https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/243585:62035?tid=&pid=&queryId=d4367eb221a403ac3ce7f07c35eb6664&_phsrc=arM750&_phstart=successSource).
Settled in New Salem, Morton, North Dakota. Have not been able to identify a Greek Orthodox Church in the area. The earliest Green Orthodox Church that is somewhat nearby may have in Minot, North Dakota.
Have not been able to identify where (Tripitsa, Tzeptiza, Terpetsa) is in Greece today.
Any suggestions on what to do from here? Thank you for your help.

I am unable to find a location in Greece that corresponds with the village name given. Are there any documents held by the family (Orthodox baptism, etc) that could name the village? I will ask on the Hellenic Genealogy Geek Facebook page if someone has an idea about the village name. Also, is there any idea what general area of Greece he was from? That could help identify the village.

I wrote a post on Hellenic Genealogy Geek and had many responses. There are several potential villages, but they are in various areas of Greece. We really do need to know at least the general area of Greece. Here are the responses - villages can be found on Google maps
- Maybe Τερπίτσα, old name of Διπλάτανος (Diplatanos is the current village)
- Tserpista in the Serres region?
- Tripiti, Gavdos, small island off Crete?
- Agio Christoforos, known before 1927 as Trebishta, is a village in the Kozani regional unit, Greece. It was the seat of the former Agia Paraskevi municipality. Wikipedia
- There was a large Greek community in what is now Turkey and one of the villages was called Troupsi
- Tripiti is north of Heraklion, Crete
- Could it be a misspelling and it’s actually Terpsithea
- Three (3) candidates from different sources. I wiil write the place names in Greek. Google maps will show the locations only for the current village name
1. Ζερμπίσια*, population 119.
The municipality (Κοινότητα Ζερμπισίων) belongs to Δήμος Μεσσήνης, Νομός Μεσσηνίας
2. Ζερμπίσια, currently known as Δύστος*, population 596.
The municipality (Κοινότητα Δύστος) belongs to Δήμος Κύμης - Αλιβερίου, Νομός Ευβοίας
3. Τερπίτσα, currently known as Διπλάτανος*, population117.
The municipality of Διπλάτανος belongs to Δήμος Θέρμου, Νομός Αιτωλοακαρνανίας
All current names marked by *, when used in Google maps, will show the exact location.

@Carol Kostakos Petranek Thanks again for going the extra mile and checking with the facebook group. I have had a similar experience trying to narrow down where the location really is. But I am going to hang on to all these suggestions. I think for now, I will do a little FAN work. Turns out there are 6 people all going to the same address on the passenger list his ancestor is on, so their are many additional relatives we can research and see if any of their US records turn up a more definitive place. Thank you again for your help.

@Carol Kostakos Petranek . I have relooked at this family. I think they are from "Terpitsa" I found this map:
http://www.gomapper.com/travel/where-is/terpitsa-located.html
It says: Terpitsa is a place with a very small population in the province of Evirtania, Greece which is located inthe continent/region of Europe. Cities, towns and places near Terpitsa include Dhiplatanos, Neokhori, Neokhorion, and Karitsa. The closest major cities include Athens, Thessaloniki, Tirana and Skopje.
Does this help us know where records for Terpitsa might be located?

It appears this area is in the region of Aetolia-Acarnania in western Greece. The website for the General State Archives of Greece for Aetolia-Acarnania is: http://gak.ait.sch.gr/. The email is: mail@gak.ait.sch.gr . I strongly recommend that instead of trying to do research yourself, that you contact my colleague, Gregory Kontos at greekancestry@outlook.com so he can assist with obtaining and translating any documents that can be found. He will also need to verify that this Terpitsa is the correct location, as there were several suggestions given that were in various areas of Greece.

@Carol Kostakos Petranek Thanks for all the input and ideas.

As far as I can see, the surname Vellios is still present in Diplatanos. There is a Nicholaos Ch. Vellios, owning a cafeteria-bar there! I know, that's new, but this could help for future research...
