Who can help with this question posted by Synthia D LaFontaine
This my first time using this forum, so please forgive/correct errors, but my dead end centers around George McCurley, born March 5, 1805. Wiki tree says this: George McCurley, Born 5 Mar 1805 in South Carolina, United States
Son of William McCurley and Polly (Unknown) McCurley, [sibling(s) unknown]
Husband of Nancy G (McMullan) McCurley — married 12 May 1831 in Elbert County, GA.
But many other sources say his father's name was John. So the dead end is really the generation above him. Who were they and who were their ancestors? I can't find any documented info answering those questions, although many trees link them to ancestors, none actually document how they derived that connection, and they differ, so I think people are just randomly copying each other's trees.
MANY of us work together to document the McCurley line, and this is one our biggest dead end. Any help greatly appreciated!

@Synthia D LaFontaine When did the McCurleys emigrate to the United States? I assume they came from Ireland, based off the surname. Is this a correct assumption? What do we know about the McCurleys prior to arriving in the United States? I did a quick check on the surname myself and found that the spellings of the Anglicized surname varies sometimes. Other spellings include:
McKerlie, McTerrelly, Curley, Kerley, Turley, Terry and others, and found particularly in the counties of Galway and Roscommon.
According to Ancestry.com, the Gaelic form of the name prior to being Anglicized was Mac Thoirdhealbhaigh, a patronymic from the personal name Toirdhealbhach ‘Thor-shaped’.

I'm going to tag our Irish research groups for their insight on this.

I am also trying to research your question. I am trying to trace Moses Mcurley who shows up in the US Census and Georgia Tax Records near to George.

Moses and George are buried in the same cemetery

First of all, thanks for so much help/offers to help. I have traced my personal McCurley lineage to Scotland, but they originated in Scotland, then many moved to Ulster, Ireland, then to the USA from there. I will paste an example with names and dates at the bottom. There are a little over 3000 "McCurleys" in the USA now, and yes, many are related to McCearley, Mccarley, Curley, Curly, McCurly, etc. I have a few records showing the different spellings among brothers/sisters in the same family. I have connected with over 400 McCurley descendants here and in Australia and the variation in spelling is confirmed, so there are actually more than 3000 descendants of the original family i study. This is one lineage chart showing locations:
A Typical McCurley's Direct Lineage in my tree)
Parent "Gene Stewart McCurley (1946 - 1999 ) Marilyn Counts Montana"
"Grand Parent" "Frank Claud McCurley w/Trentie Lee White 1906 Oklahoma - 1974 California"
"Great GP" "John Brown (Jony Jack) McCurley w/Willie Hyatt 1877-1939"
"2nd GGP" "Francis Marion McCurley w/Richie Jehervie Evangeline Ensey 1851 Illinois - 1904 Oklahoma"
"3rd GGP" "Jonas Brown McCurley w/Sarah Elizabeth Ann Cosbie 1812 Tennessee - 1899 Oklahoma"
"4th GGP" "Abraham Moses McCurley w/Nancy Catherine Brown 1782 N. Carolina -1843 Illinois"
"5th GGP" "Abraham Moses McCurley w/Bethany Wineford 1755 S. Carolina - 1825 Tennessee"
"6th GGP" "Abraham Moses McCurley w/Ruth Ford 1708 Ireland - 1787 S. Carolina"
"7th GGP" "John Kirlay w/Janet McKindlay 1658 Scotland ~ 1748 Scotland"
"8th GGP" "William Kirlie w/Margaret Dalzell 1633 Scotland ~ 1673 Scotland"
"9th GGP" "Johne Kirlie w/Jonnet Perrie 1605 Scotland ~?, Scotland"
First dead end, we are unable to trace further back than Johne Kirlie than shown, except perhaps his children's Baptismal records. I believe the main area of residence for those in Scotland was Lanarkshire.
HOWEVER, there are a few dead ends/brick walls in the tree of Mccurley families/lineages in the US since the 17-1800s that do not connect to the any of the McCurley's shown above, or any others that lead back to the United kingdom. They end in the USA, and, of course, they had to be from Ireland, Scotland, England, etc.
More help is needed with:
George L. McCurley 1805–1833, BIRTH 1805 ???, DEATH BEF. 1833 • Alabama, USA
- His Mother MAY be Catharina McCurley 1785–???
These are his spouse and children: Spouse & Children
SPOUSE: Mary Ann "Polly" McADAMS, 1806–1901
CHILDREN
I have only a very few more brick walls, all USA based McCurley's that simply "appear" in the 1700s and 1800s and descend to today's McCurleys, but think I've asked for enough!
We are a group of about 466 McCurley descendants in a Facebook group trying to trace our roots together, so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated by MANY McCurley's! even if it is just a link of "where to look next"..although we've covered a lot of internet territory already, but need new avenues of potential records to fill in the gaps and show where all of the McCurley branches currently in the USA and Australia began in Great Britain, specific to which countries in Great Britain. Of course, McCurleys did not originate in Alabama, or South Carolina, etc.
Thank you so much!!!!

We've got them and the downline from them, but can't find the jump over from Great Britain. Here is one of our bigger trees on Ancestry, it is public: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/160690157/person/132101063312/facts?_phsrc=Smg13099&_phstart=successSource

Sorry that was a DIFFERENT McCurley dead end than I originally posted about! The original dead end is:
This my first time using this forum, so please forgive/correct errors, but my dead end centers around George McCurley, born March 5, 1805. Wiki tree says this: George McCurley, Born 5 Mar 1805 in South Carolina, United States

We know of descendants of William and George to current people but have no record of where his father came from/his Irish lineage, /origin. Thanks for any info you can offer! Synthia

Synthia,
The author/compiler David Dobson is a prolific publisher of too numerous book titles to mention here, and has compiled and published in particular a number of works on Scots and Scots-Irish immigrants into the Carolinas, and almost the whole east coast of the United States. The Family History Library's US book collection has done decently to keep up on his publications, and it possesses just about all that he's published. As the FHL is now closed for obvious reasons, and could be for still some time to come, I'd suggest searching the www.worldcat.org online catalog to determine as many of his publications relating to Virginia, Carolina, and Maryland Scots coming over to this country and search them for possible clues and clarifying details. This online catalog will direct you to those libraries--including university/college libraries where publications may be located nearest to your residence! Perhaps some other states may be re-opening their libraries a bit sooner than here in Utah so this website could be an excellent option for you--either way.
Also, consider that if you know the towns in the Carolina's where your McCurleys resided, check the town and other local histories and (especially) Presbyterian settlements and study to learn the ministers' names associated with those town[s] in which your ancestors lived (i.e. South Carolina, etc.). By tracing the history of the local church congregations and minister biographies, it just might hint of his origins. Depending on the era, sometimes, wholesale Scottish congregations pulled up roots and together they sailed over to the U.S.
So knowing about the minister[s]' background sometimes may lead to the 'doorstep' of place of origin in Scotland (or sometimes Northern Ireland) .
I should mention that Dobson's publications often provide researchers with the locale from where an immigrant came...
Success to you.
