Maryland, Baltimore Passenger Lists Index, 1820-1897 Data Definition Help
"Maryland, Baltimore Passenger Lists Index, 1820-1897." Database with images. FamilySearch. http://FamilySearch.org : 18 July 2022. Citing NARA microfilm publication M327. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.
I am looking at this document, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9F-Z7M1
I am trying to understand what U144-4-107 is?
Also, trying to understand what is the 85 written on the left side of the document?
After they arrived, they ended up in Chicago with a relative, another daughter, in 1880.
Maria was married and in 1885 they moved to Nebraska and I know that Jacob and Veronica followed Maria to Nebraska and were in a territory census in 1885. Do you think that the naturalization was completed in 1885? Is it just a coincident the 85?
I am looking to find out if this information will help me find if there is any naturalization papers. Looking to break a brick wall trying to turn over ever stone..
Would appreciate any expertise that someone might have..
Thanks Yvonne

I don’t know what “U144-4-107” and “85” mean on the index card you referenced, but I don’t think those numbers will be very helpful in your research. However, in Ancestry.com/Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., Passenger Lists, 1820-1964/Jacob Klowschka (notice the different transcription spelling of the surname), you can find an image of the actual passenger list with all the persons referred to on Jacob’s card. This actual passenger list doesn’t provide any additional information beyond the card’s information. Immigrant’s often change their given and/or surnames after arriving in America to minimize problems like this transcription error, discrimination and for other reasons – have you tried searching (including Naturalization records) in America for Jacob under a different (“Americanized”, maybe something like “Klaus”) surname?

The U144-4-107 is the location of the person's name in the register of ship manifests. I am not sure what the U144 means but the 4-107 is the page (4) and passenger (107) number of the manifest for the ship on which the person arrived. The page for Jacob is located on FamilySearch at the following link. The U144 might be an identifier for the specific ship and passenger list? No idea what the 85 stands for, but I'm still looking.
Please post your findings so others can benefit from whatever you learn. Thank you and happy ancester hunting!
