Merged two males. Now have the wife plus an "unknown wife" on the merged record.
The merged record that remained had no wife listed when I started. I moved the wife from the subsumed record to the remaining record on the merge screen then merged. The remaining merged record now has the correct wife but it also lists an "unknown wife". How did this happen and how do I remove that?

The "Unknown" Wife/Spouse WOULD have been included as being attached to one of those being "Merged"/"Combined", either, the "Surviving" individual/person; or, the "Deleted" (ie, "Archived") person/individual.

The "Unknown" Wife/Spouse would NOT have appeared 'out of thin air' just because of the "Merge" /"Combine".
.
It is easy to "Remove" the "Unknown" Wife/Spouse from the "Surviving" individual/person.

Go to "Couple Relationship" where the "Unknown" Wife/Spouse appears; and, select the "Pencil" Icon.

When the "Pop-Up" 'Box' (or, "Modal" 'Window' as it is also known) appears (to the left), go to the "Bottom" of the "Pop-Up" 'Box' (or, "Modal" 'Window' as it is also known) where is says "Delete Relationship" (with a "Waste" 'Basket' Icon); and, select that "Delete Relationship" 'Link'.

That will being up another "Pop-Up" 'Box' (or, "Modal" 'Window' as it is also known) that is very prominent.

"Tick"/"Check' the the "I have reviewed the relationships, sources, and notes for these individuals.".
.
And, select "Continue".
.
Then continue with the process.

That will "Delete" that unwanted "Couple Relationship".

Have tried this - one problem - there is no pencil icon in the unknown wife relationship (where it just says "Add Spouse").

The pencil icon you need to use to correct this problem is on the child, not the couple. Make sure you are showing the child(ren) below the unknown spouse. Click the pencil icon to the right of the child. Then remove the child in the window that pops up.
Make sure you are using the pencil icon by the child under the unknown spouse, not by the child under the actual spouse.

When you refereed to "Unknown" Spouse/Wife, I thought that you were referring to the "Name" of the Spouse/Wife as being that of "Unknown" or a "?".
.
Your "Screen Print" makes things a lot more clearer ...
.
In that case, like 'Alan' has already indicated, you have to "Delete" the "Child" from the "Parent-Child" Relationship where the is NO Spouse/Wife or Mother.
.
Same principal, just slightly different steps in the process to follow.

The reason for the other Mathias without a wife that there is a child that's attached. You need to determine if the child with an unknown mother (Matthew F. Jenne) is the same person as the child whose mother is Ricka Kopfman (Mathew Jenne). If so, they need to be merged. Once that's done, the Mathias with no wife will go away.
If they are NOT the same person, you need to add him as a child of Mathias and Ricka and then delete the relationship of him with his father but no mother.

Thanks WL1; that did work perfectly.
It also "forced" me to merge those other two whom I had identified as the same already.
Soon as I merged them, the extra "unknown" marriage went away in the parent just as you said it would.
