1794 birth record translation
Could someone please help me translate the last word of this line from a 1794 birth record from Kildalton?

Hi Jenn, We think this is the answer to your question. Please let me know if you need more information.
We think it reads as James, son of Alex Kerr, Mecht (presumably short for merchant), Taicaragaman. Usually the place they lived follows the occupation . There was a Taycargaman Farm on the Isle if Islay possibly a variation of the spelling.
Taicaragaman, (Tigh Cargaman Gaelic ) being the place and it usually follows the occupation.

Thanks so much for your input on this! I thought it was likely a location name but I couldn't make sense of it. I've not even sure this record belongs to my Kerr family but all these little clues will hopefully add up one day!

A list of all reports 1801-1961 is available here. The census is now run by the Office for National Statistics and GRO Scotland. Census data for individuals can only be accessed after 100 years, and are available from the National Archives.

Thank you for sharing this link - I hadn't seen this site before. I poked around a bit but can't seem to access the actual families in the census records in 1801. The National Archives says it has census records from 1841 onward but I can't seem to find how to access the earlier ones.

Hi Jenn, The early census was mostly to record the population, not specific people. The first census with more information was in 1841. These links abelow are very good sites to look for your families information.
This last link is good because you can email EU Support for free help with your tree. There are trained members of the church waiting to answer your questions.

Thanks for this info. My ancestors left Scotland for Nova Scotia in about 1800 and I'm still searching for them in Scottish records so I won't have any links to anyone in the 1841 census that I know of. I have a father's name and four children's names but I can't seem find an obvious possible family in parish birth records. I'll keep digging!
