confirming parents of Maria Magdelena Jacobs
Hi
I want to confirm the parents of Maria Magdelena Jacobs L1HN-C6W by finding her baptism record but have not had any luck.
Maria Magdelena Jacobs (1895–1975) | Person | Family Tree | FamilySearch
What I do know from what her daughter, my grandmother, told me.
The McMasters and Campbells in in Boksburg were her family. What I found was Edward Andrew McMaster (96TP-DHB) married to Sarah Petronella Jacobs (this couple's daughter married the Campbell she was talking about)
Sara Petronella Jacobs (GC9X-8WJ) was either her sister or mother I would think. If mother, the MM Jacobs was born out of wedlock.
My suspicion is that it was her sister as there is a brother born after her, if ES Jacobs (LCCS-MNZ) is her father and SJC Olivier (GC9X-WX1) is her mother
If anyone can help me with the baptism record, or a record of proof, I will really appreciate it.
Regards

If she was born in 1895 her birth should have been registered, if you go to the Cape Town archives you look for her official birth records in the register for Hopetown. Alternatively if she had a 13 digit ID Number you can apply to Department of Home Affairs for a vault copy of her birth.
Do you know what church she belonged to? She does not appear in the indexes for the DRC church. Not all baptisms have been indexed so you may need to look through films. The Anglican records for Hopetown do not appear to be on-line - if you are in JHB you could try the Cullen Library at Wits Uni, they have films if all the Anglican records in their possession
Looking at the Jacobs family that is set up on FS there appear to be issues there are two sons with the same name alive at the same time!
I have found (and attached) baptisms for:
- Susarah Petronella b 1875
- Daniel Jacobus b1877
- Gert Cornelius b 1880
- Frederika Elizabeth 1883 (added)
- Erasmus Stefanus b 1885
- Susanna Cornelia b 1887 (added)
- Renschie Jacoba b 1890 (added)
- Hester Johanna b 1892 (added)
- Erasmus Stefanus b 1895 (Added)
- Sijbrand 1901 already had a baptism attached
So it would seem the couple baptised their children in the Hopetown DRC and given they had a child Erasmus Stefanus on 27 Feb 1895 it is unlikely this couple are her parents!

Hi
Thanks some good work here. Some interesting points on the children you added.
- You added Erasmus Stephanus 27 Feb 1895. This is exactly same date as Maria Magdalene Jacobs (do we have twins here?)
- There is already a sone with these exact names born in 1885 and died in 1942. His death record (probate) clearly shows he is child of this couple (2 sons with same names?)
My logical conclusion (and I could be totally wrong).
- 1st daughter named after grandmother on mother side - check
- 1st son called after grandfather , father side - correct
- 2nd son called after grandfather , mothers side - correct
- 2nd daughter after grandmother on fathers side - correct
- 3rd son called after father - correct (ES jacobs 1885)
- 3rd daughter after mother - correct
So this ES Jacobs 1895 record is incorrect? Is this not maybe the record for Maria Magdalena ? scribe write the fathers name instead of child??
Interesting

Hi
What could have occurred is she changed her name from a boys name to a girls name - it was not unusual for daughters to be given make family names and sons female family names. The only way to prove this is to look at the original birth register which is accessible in the Cape Town archive - that would list the parents and the sex of the child
There was only one Jacobs child baptised that day so not a twin - you could be right about the name wrongly transcribed into the ring book - though looking at the original register it is also recorded there as Erasmus https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSK6-CC9W?i=993&cat=1153610
The elder brother with the same name was still alive so I guess an error in recording - if you are in SA the next bet would be to visit the Archive and look at the birth registers! They start c 1894

Hi
Thanks to all that helped. I did find the birth record and my suspicion was correct. The birth record was with so many spelling errors, no wonder the search did not pick it up :)
