Essex County, England Archives
Would anyone have access to the Essex County, England Archives? I would like to be able to read the will of George Gates of Asheldham, will dated 10 March 1634/5, but do not have a subscription. Thank you.

You can subscribe to the Essex Record Office collection. This can cost as little as £20 (incl VAT not charged if you are abroad) for a day. I have done this a couple of times in the past. Worth saving any other Essex queries you have to get your money's worth.

Thank you for your reply. I asked because the subscription amount is a little pricey for me.

I have used this service on a number of occasions and have found the best idea, as Graham points out, is to record a list of records that you wish to download. In a day, you will probably be able to download numerous baptism, marriage and burial records, as well as probate records. Ordering just two paper versions of marriage certificates from the General Register Office will cost more than the £20 involved here, so I believe you will be able to get really good value.
I have not visited the Essex Record Office for several years. Whilst records were free to view once there, my train ticket (from my London home) and buying lunch would cost about the same amount!
