In German B-M-D narrative records, what does the designation “citizen” mean?
I have seen this designation in many records in the 1700s. I know it doesn't mean what it means in the U.S. but I've never had a good understanding of what it does mean.
Thank you,
Elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth,
Here is the link to the article about "Bürger" from the German Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%BCrger
Translate to English and then read in particular the section entitled "Middle Ages and early modern times". This should provide a good overview as to what was meant by "Bürger" in Germany in earlier times.

Thank you, Robert. That article was very helpful. You're the best!
I had seen this in records I found on my last trip to the Family History Library in 2019. Now that I will be going there again in March, I will have a better appreciation if I see this in new records. Thank you so much.
