Help Translating a Norwegian marriage Record
This is my first attempt to ask for translation help. I believe this is the marriage record for Gilbert O Hammer pid L4W1-96B and Marie Hovland pid L4w-1SR2. Gilbert O Hammer came to the US in the 1880's and was still single and farming in North Dakota in 1900. It seems he made a trip back to Norway in 1904 to get married.
1.can you translate this church marriage record for 23 july 1904?
- Can you help me understand how the wife's name became Marie Hovland vs the name on the record ie Marie Gunderssen Lillegoviaers?
- Are you able to identify the complete birth locality for Gilbert and Marie, ie Garliansar and Lillehaland respectively? I don't know what localities these refer to. I am hoping to figure out the town, county, etc from these names.
- I have not done research in Norway and am trying to help another member whose grandfather is this Gilbert O Hammer. This is the end of line ancestor in Family Search and we hope this helps him make a connection from his United States relatives back to the ancestor's line in Norway.

I hope you realize that the link you've provided to a location on Ancestry.com is only available to those who are paid subscribers to that service. To the rest of us that link just gives us a nice advertisement on how we could give them money and join.
If Garliansar and Lillehaland are found on the marriage record then they are probably the names of the farms or residences where the groom and the bride either resided at the time of the marriage or where they were born depending on where the information was recorded on the marriage record.
Does your Ancestry find give the name of WHERE and when in Norway this record is found? We have other -non-Ancestry places online where we can look at Norwegian parish records for free BUT we need to know where and when to be looking.

Sorry, I did not realize the link doesn't work for everyone. The source also appears in FamilySearch, but in familySearch there is only indexed data, not a link that lets you see the actual record. Here is exactly what appears in FamilySearch:
Citation: Norway Marriages, 1660-1926, Gilbert O Hammer, 1904.
Source Details: Bk 2 pg 396 #24
Reference: Item 2
Marriage Place Norderhov,Buskerud,Norway
Marriage Date: 23 July 1904
Spouse's father Name: Gunnar Evensen
Spouse's name: Marie Gunderson LIllehovland
Father's Name: Ole Halgrimsen Garhamar
Name: Gilbert O. Hammer
*****
The Ancestry.com source is different. Here is what it says:
Norway Church records 1812-1938
Source Citation: The National Archives of Norway-Arkivverket;Norway;Church Books 1815-1960; Reference Number: SAKO/A-237/F/FA/L0017
Original data: KirkeBoker 1812-1938,Arkivverket,Norge.
When you are looking at the actual source image in Ancestry.com, it says:
Norway,Church Records, 1812-1938 for Gilbert O. Hammer, Buskerud>Norderhao>Norderhov>1903-1919
the actual page number, upper right corner of the page, is 291
The microfilm image number is 115 of 224
Name: Gilbert O. Hammer
Marriage age: 48
Record type: ekteskap
Birth date: 1856
Birth Place: Garhamar
Marriage date: 23 Juli 1904
Marriage Place: Norderhav, Buskerud,Norge
Mariage Municipality: Norderhov
Residence Place: Pauner Cousty Norke Docold
Father: Ole Halgrimsen
Spouse: Marie Gundersen Lillehovland
then the spouse's record gives the following:
Name: Marie Gunderson Lillehovland
Marriage age: 32
Record type: ekteskap
birth date: 1872
Birth Place: Lillehovland
Father: Gunner Evensen
Spouse: Gilbert O Hammer
There is something written in ( ) underneath Gilbert O. Hammer's Name, which I can't make out. and also something in the next column to the right of his name.
Hopefully, this will enable you to locate the original document image I am looking at. I would copy paste the image here, but I don't think Ancestry.com allows this. At any rate, I couldn't figure out how to do it.
Sincerely,
Dennis Campnell

That marriage record comes from Norderhov parish/district of Buskerud, Norway.
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061102310453
It is from the Norderhov parish book (Klokker copy), book No. I 8 (1887-1912,) page 396

"Gilbert" has obviously chosen to 'Americanize' his name. His marriage record lists that he was born on 'Garhamar' (handwriting makes that spelling a bit questionable). So he has chosen to shorten his farm address and use that as his American surname - Hammer. Spelling differences make no difference - if it would sound the same - it is the same. The article about Norderhov lists the farm names in that district and you will notice both Gaardhammer and Garhammer spellings clearly given. (The Gaard.... spelling is probably much older but perfectly acceptable.)
That document also lists him as born in 1856 in Norderhov on the Garhamar farm. His father Ole Halgrimsen Garhamar (so his father still lives on that farm). Mothers were not noted on a marriage record.
Marie is Marie Gundersen Lillehovland. You indicate that she has later shortened that somewhere to Hovland. Lille means small or little in Norwegian (see the translations I linked for you) and so she was born on the Lillehovland (or Hovland Lille) farm in Norderhov in 1886, father was Gunder Evensen (I am unable to decipher what appears to be a title or more likely occupation listed just before his given name.) Marie's patronymic has been a bit modernized from what would have been the traditional Gundersdatter - but it is 1904 and things were beginning to change.
From this point were it my own research I would use the parish records of Norderhov to find the birth/baptismal records of each 'Gilbert' (I doubt that was the original given name for him.) and Marie. Those records would be the most primary and best proofs of their parentage and the beginning of an ancestral tree structure. So you could encourage your friend to begin to learn Norwegian research or perhaps you may continue to generously help them so much.
Happy hunting!!

The birth/baptism record for "Gilbert O Hammer" (Americanized name used later in life).
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051111050490
Gulbrand, born 19 Nov 1856, baptised 9 April 1857 (looks like in Lunder sub-parish or chapel), father Ole Halgrimsen of Gaardhammer (farm), wife Berte Gundersdatter.
The records for Norderhov were very difficult for me - I have no family history in that area. Hopefully you and your friend will learn to use them OR find someone with familiarity in that part of Buskerud to help continue your search.
Good luck.

Hi Prisvold1,
Thank you so much for your help and The added information on the names. and finding the birth record for Gilbert O Hammer! I knew just enough about Norwegian Names to know that they are a challenge and that it is easy to get off on the wrong track. I feel we now can be confident that we have found the right family.
I am preparing a "family history discovery experience" for my friend and this is exactly the spot on his pedigree where he wants to learn more. My friend's father,Gunnar Odvin Hammer Fagerlund, (1908-2011) was adopted a a 6 year old child, after his biological parents, Gilbert O. Hammer and Marie Hovland, both died of tuberculosis in 1914 in Perth,Towner, North Dakota. Gunner Odvin Hammer assumed his adopted family's last name, (Fagerlund). The biological family's name, (Hammer) and the connection to the Norway Ancestors is now being rediscovered as a result of your assistance!
I am scheduled to meet with my friend on Wednesday March 2, 2022 and he will learn at that time what has been discovered. I can't wait to see what his reaction will be!
Sincerely,
Dennis Campnell, 877 Medsker Road, Sequim, Clallam County, Washington, United States

Stumbled across another record for that family at the Digitalarkivet website. Don't even ask me how - I do not know. Dumb luck I guess.
The marriage record in 1851 for "Gilbert"s parents, Ole Halgrimsen and Berte Gunnersdtr/Gundersdtr. Last entry on the pages here - https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070314640132

Here's some fun. Doing a search under the Advanced Person Search in the Digitalarkivet for emigration records: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/search/persons/advanced?no_alias=1&from=&to=&sc%5B0%5D=em&firstname=gilb%2A&lastname=ham%2A&birth_year_from=&birth_year_to=&birth_date=&birth_place=&domicile=&position=&event_year_from=&event_year_to=&event_date=&related_first_name=&related_last_name=&related_birth_year=&sort=rel
Shows that Gilbert and his new wife were on the boat about two weeks after they got married:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000552046
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000552047
Navigating from Gilbert's record to Marie's is a bit complicated. Starting on Gilbert's go to the right hand side and in the white box, click on the emigration date. That will bring up a small summary of his record. Just below his name, the Previous and Next boxes are now active. Clicking Next brings you to Marie's summary and clicking on her name brings up the full record. These are just transcripts. There are no images.
Working back a bit farther, his marriage record states that he was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Norderhov in 1871. That record is here: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051111040237 on line 28. Just before his name is a little notice: Am 4/6-80, short for America 4 June 1880. And his is his record of moving out of the parish https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061102310063, right hand side, entry No. 65.
