🎖️ Go for the Gold! Olympics and Family History are a Winning Combination 🌍️
February 20 marks the end of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Bejing. We've seen triumphs and tragedies, tears of joy and tears of pain, new world records set, witnessed stories of delight and defeat, and years of hard work coming to fruition in a worldwide celebration.
Discovering your family history has many similar characteristics as new ancestors are found in recently published records, brick walls begin to crumble as you connect with a relative you never knew, and years of hard work pay off as you grow your family tree through DNA findings.
Take this opportunity to share your family history "Olympic" stories with the children and youth in their life. Show photos of what your ancestors looked like, what they ate, where they lived, what was important to them. Research shows these family stories help kids, especially teenagers, become more resilient, understand their identity, and have increased self-esteem.
Share your family stories and have some fun! Here are a few ideas to try:
- Celebrate your homeland countries and more
- Find out which ancestors were living during historical Olympics or maybe even relatives that attended the Olympic Games in person
- See famous people here and here that have participated in the Olympics, and then see what famous people you are related to
- Challenge each other to an Ancestor Quiz
No matter what you choose, have fun celebrating your ancestors from around the world in your own family history Olympics! Let us know what ideas you tried or want to try; share any additional ideas below.
