Please help with 1778 burial record(s) for Claus Elfers
There are two burial records for Claus Elfers and I would appreciate some help with the translations to hopefully decide which is my 5th great grandfather. It seems as though both men are from Nordahn, and both died age 65. I wonder if there is a mention of an occupation or spouse to help distinguish between the two.
The first burial record is 26 Feb 1778, image 414 on right side of p 67, #15.
The second is 25 Mar 1778, image 415 on bottom left of p 68, #24.
These records are from Ancestry: Elbe-Weser Triangle, Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1621–1879; Neuhaus>Lamstedt>Heiraten, Taufen u Tote 1762-1818

Thank you so much, Robert. Would it be usual for a surviving spouse to be mentioned? I think I have seen that in other death records, but maybe only for husbands when it is the wife who died.
I am thinking the second one might be "my" Claus because of the mention he was a farmer. I know this is not conclusive, however. I need to double check all my records, now that I know there were two men named Claus in Nordhan, both about the same age. I do have a birth date of 15 Jun 1712 which works out to be closer to the second Claus but without weeks or days, it still could be for either Claus.
Looks like I have more work to do!
Thanks again,
Brenda

Hello Brenda,
It is not unusual for the surviving wife to not be mentioned in the husband's death record. As you said, it would be more common for the husband to be mentioned in the case of the wife's death.
If we take the ages in both records at face value then:
the first Claus Elfers would have a calculated birth date of: February 1713.
the second Claus Elfers would have a calculated birth date of: June 1712.
Given this, I would agree with your hypothesis that the second Claus Elfers is a more likely candidate to be your 5th great-grandather.

Second burial record:
Number 24. March 25th: Claus Elfers, a former farmer but now an old man/pensioner/grandfather at Nordahn, who on the 19th of the same month painfully died from severe colic, age 65 years and 9 months, [was buried] with a sermon from the altar.
