EDITING/PROCESSING/MANIPULATING/SHARING/STORING DIGITAL IMAGES
How many of you use some sort of digital image processing/manipulation software?
something as simple as windows "snipping tool" to screen capture programs like "Snagit"
to more robust and full-featured programs like Photoscape (freeware) or the more popular (but very costly) Photoshop - or a multitude of smart phones apps now available??
In all my years of genealogical research the one skill that has probably benefited me more and used more often on day to day tasks - is that of image processing and manipulation - don't get thrown off by the "tech lingo" - something as simple as how to share a screen shot, or how to download a photo, or how to digitally label a photo, or how to crop and resize an image, or how to compress it, or how to edit an image or photo, or how to compile many types of media all together into a report, document, or Powerpoint.
These are just a few of the things I do many times daily in just about all aspects of my computer use both work and personal, both genealogy or non-genealogy.
Image processing doesn't have to cost lost of money - there is great software out there for free - and you don't have to get extensive training on how to use it. . . even some very basic things - like taking and manipulating a screen shot - can be a tremendously valuable skill and be learned within a few minutes.
Continually learning new (simple / basic) computer skills - can have a dramatic effect on your efficiency and level of stress/frustration (or lack thereof) on the computer.
My suggestion is almost always - "find a friend/family member" who can act as a mentor and have them show you basic skills that you are still learning. If technology is stressful to you- - find ways to reduce it- by basic learning and education - that doesnt even have to cost money or a whole lot of time.

it didnt cost me a penny. and I just started playing with it - and learning it all on my own - without even a manual. - though like I said - your best bet is to find someone you know that can show you what they use - and be a mentor - so you can avoid banging your head against the wall as you learn something new.
I am not trying to "sell" photoscape - there are plenty of alternate "apps" out there
especially for your smart phone.

Before I discovered the snipping Tool some 5 years or so ago I used Picassa all the time , great piece of Free Photo editing software where one could do all sorts of editing ,enlarging ,lighten ,darken and even colouring with an add on they had ,it was simple ... I even used it for some old Negatives of my dads , by scanning them and Picassa has an Invert Colours opion which basically will turn a Negative into a Positive [ A Photo] .
They then retired the Colour making tool, then eventually they stopped the updates for it but guess what it still is Possible to download it online and use as I am in Win 10 .I have it connected to my Google Photos it scans my Photos and uploads them online infact I just enabled a recent download to my New Acer bought for xmas and it is now adding not only my photos to it but also my Family Tree Maker Tree File . One just has to remember if one edits a Photo make a copy to edit then in Picassa or other software , when finished SAVE A NEW Copy of that edited photo , to ones Pictures and name it otherwise one will be so dissappointed when one goes to find it and you have lost the original when something happens to the software .
I also did have an old Photoshop which I must see if I can find & restart on this lap top as that was good for certain editing also . Windows Paint I used a few times in the past
but the Snipping tool is my go to for capturing , editing and hightlighting any Records that need adding to my Tree especially when at some place where I am using say some records center facility using their Computer or if possible if I take my Lap Top , I can snip the record and add straight to my tree online such as on Ancestry , saves the paper and is a better copy all round .
