Go to his personal page, and scroll down to where it shows his name on the left, with his wife and children, if any, and his adopted parents on the right. Right above the box with his parents' names is a plus sign and the words "Add Parent"; click on "Add Parent," fill in the name, dates, and gender for one of the birth parents and mark whether living or deceased; then click "Next." On the next page, if a duplicate does not show up, click "Create Person." There will now be two parent boxes; click on "Add Spouse" for the birth parent, and fill in the information for the other birth parent.
Once both birth parents have been added, click on the little edit icon to the right of your ward member's own name where he is listed as a child of the birth parents; this will open up a "Parent-Child Relationship" box. Under the birth father's name, it will show the type of "Relationship to Child." If the type is incorrect, click on the blue "Edit," change the type, and click "Save." Check that the relationship type is correct for the birth parents and the adoptive parents, and change any that are incorrect.

There is a circle under the parents which says "preferred". When you choose it, that set of parents will show up on the fan chart and pedigree.

Thank you all for you comments/help

P.S. You might have him join the @Adoption and Unknown Family Research where he can help others by telling his path to finding his family!

@Daniel Howard Bott Did you figure out how to add birth parents to the tree?
How did he find his birth parents?

Carolyn: if he was adopted with the help of his local ward, the LDS Church is often very open to contacting the birth parents to see if they are interested in communication. In my experience, the Catholic Dioceses are just the opposite.

Brett, I am not great on computers like you. How do you get screen shots like above onto sites like this one or onto word docs or e-mails you are using to teach others etc, how do you add the red arrows, the red circles you wish to highlight, scratch outs of names you don't want us all to see etc. Is there a step by step explanation for computer novices like me? Thanks!

Certainly nothing too technical; because, I an not that 'tech' savvy.
.
By the way, I use 'Microsoft' "Windows", I do not use "Apple" products.
.
To get 'Screen Shots', I either use,
.
(1) the "Prt Sc" (ie. "Print Screen") 'Button' on my keyboard (Top line set of keys - middle 'right-hand-side'), which saves the image on just what is in font of you on the screen, to your "Clip Board", from which you can paste in most any application (eg. this Forum; an image editor; or, a 'Microsoft' Word Document; or, the like); or,
.
(2) if I need a larger selection than that is on the screen, I use a "Screen Shot" Extension which also enables the image to be pasted in most any application (eg. this Forum; an image editor; or, a 'Microsoft' Word Document; or, the like).
.
I generally use and work in 'Google' "Chrome"; and, as such, use a number of different "Screen Shot" Extensions for "Chrome" (eg. "FireShot) which are FREE and can be downloaded.
.
To add all the Circles; Arrows; and, Redact information, that is very easy (once you know how to use it), I simply use 'Microsoft' "Paint" that comes with "Windows".
.
As I said, nothing to too technical.
.
Provided you use "Windows":
.
To start with:
.
Enable 'Microsoft' "Paint" on you computer - learn and play around with that - get the feel for it.
.
Then, try out the "Prt Sc" (ie. "Print Screen") 'Button' - try pasting what is in the "Clip Board" in something like 'Microsoft' "Paint"; and, play around with that - get the feel for it.
.
It does not come instantly, took me a bit of 'trial and error'; but, take the time, it is worth it.
.
Of course, if you have experience with other programmes (eg. this Forum; an image editor; or, a 'Microsoft' Word Document; or, the like) you can "Paste" and play around in them too.
.
I hope this helps.
