Not sure how the adoption records work
I was perusing these records and came across a relative of mine. It shows the first and last name. Now if my relative was adopted that wouldn't be their same last name would it? Or maybe people specifically go out and adopt a relative? Or they adopt a non-relative that just happens to have the same last name. In specific I was in the Home for Hebrew Infants records.

many times a child would be returned to the parents, sometimes a relative would take them in, the name you see could possibly be the child's new name after adoption... It really depends on the situation, so it's hard to say because each one is a different set of circumstances. If you could provide the name, birth, location info and any other info you may have, along with a link to the person record we may be able to help you figure it out. :) So to answer your question, yes, any of the scenarios you mentioned may have been possible
