I would like to know what does the writing on my greatgrandparent'a grave mean?
First thank you for the answers for my last question, they were useful.
Now I would like to know what is the meaning of the writing on my Bókon and Herbst greatgrandparents's gravestone. I know, it means 'Jesus, take mercy on them'. Did they do something bad? It seems kinda negative, and most people have the word 'peace' on their grave. I'm curious about your opinion.

This sentence is included in burial prayers as well. like this: "Our Lord, take mercy on us, our Lord, let us off.... " It is a kind of invocatory for a better life in the next World...
Do not think on anything negative, here it is just a wish....

I was a Catholic when younger and I heard this a lot at Mass. "Have mercy on us."

I don't think that anyone was bad. The Catholic Church wants everyone to be humble in the face of Christ. Especially now during Lent we get reminded of how we offend Christ by engaging in negative behavior. Back when our ancestors lived the priests were more severe in their sermons. I remember that when I was a kid in the 50's and early 60's we were all treated as if we were going to go to hell if we didn't act a certain way. So I think that a lot of parishioners were just plain scared of what was going to happen to them. There is a great concern of whether or not we are going to make it to heaven. I will probably hear this phrase when I go to church in about 8 hours especially in the early part of the Mass.
