I would like to find my great grandfather's record in the 1870 census in Minnesota.
My great grandfather, Charles Slechta, emigrated from Bohemia (Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time) to the USA in 1867 as a 17yr old man. I thought he came right to Minnesota. But I do not find him listed in the census of 1870. I have looked under other last name spellings and have also looked at some nearby states. Do you have any strategy suggestions I should try? Is it possible he was missed in the census?

Yes, it is possible that he was missed. Have you looked at the 1870 Census for the US and not by specific states? Have you found an emigration record for him that might show a different time of his arrival in the US?

Hello Steve,
Thank you for the advice. I will try looking at the US census. I will also recheck his emigration date. Marianne

A misspelled surname and or a abbreviated first name/names can also be an major issue. I have a ancestor whose surname was Kuechle, in the 1860 census after many years searching I found him as J Keatly, all of the household has just a first initial. Other misspellings include Kuchle, Koechler, Kitchle, Knechle, Keighley.
