Hello Catherine,
I live in SA. Not sure if I can help, but I'd be happy to try. You need to be aware that 1958 is very recent and the child could well still be living and there would be privacy issues. Would like to send me details on your specific query?

Hello Catherine,
If this child is in fact the daughter of your Aunt, you can easily calculate the age of the mother (your Aunt) if you know the age of the child now. Age of the child will give you her birth year. Birth year of child less the birth year of your Aunt gives you the age of said child's mother at birth.
It seems to me you are wanting to know if the child's mother signed the adoption paper work or someone else did?
Birth registration Index information is freely available for births up to 1928 which means you can request a transcription for a fee through Genealogy SA.
If however this child was born post 1928 and your Aunt is the birth mother she will need to make an application for adoption information here;
https://www.childprotection.sa.gov.au/adoption/provision-of-adoption-information.
If your Aunt is deceased the website outlines who is eligible to make the application.
I hope this helps.

My aunt was 38 in 1958 but have been told the birth mother was 16.

Hi again Catherine,
So if is that you are saying the child was born in 1958 and the birth mother was 16, then you're Aunt could not be the mother as she was 38, as you have stated.
Here are some thoughts that may help progress your research;
If the child stated the mother was 16, how can that be proven?
How is it that the child has determined your Aunt is her mother?
If your Aunt is still living is this something you could verify with her? If she is deceased does she have any living siblings that can verify if she had a child put up for adoption? If not, then it might be best to seek a copy of the adoption papers.
If you are still in contact with the child, she could definitely apply for a copy of the adoption papers (if she hasn't done so already).
Last resort is the option of DNA matching - the child and the nearest living relative of the Aunt (preferably a child, if not, a grandchild). If the child is willing to do this, then you'd think she would be willing to apply for adoption papers.
All the best.
