What happened to Lois Kilby?
I recently discovered I had two sisters who were surrendered to the Oklahoma Children's Home Society in 1916. Lois Kilby 5 years old and younger sister, Josephine, 3 years old. I have found the history of Josephine but can't find what happened to Lois.

Jim, can you summarize some of what we found? I wonder if we can get the majority of details in one message, so that we can see where we need to go from there.

The father, James Franklin Kilby, was born Jun 24, 1890, in Cedar Glades, Arkansas. The mother, Mae Bingman, was born 1889. James and Mae were married in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma in early 1900s. Lois and sister, Josephine were born approximately 1910 and 1912 respectively. In the divorce petition dated Aug 30, 1917, it says both girls were adopted by "good and substantial people." So, Lois would have been adopted sometime between July 29, 1916 and Aug 30, 1917. The mother, Mae, is believed to have died in the San Diego area between 1975 and 1995.

We know that Mae Bingman was the mother and, we believe, died in Santee, CA in late 1970s or 1980s. At the time of her death she was going by the name Mae Cole and married to Forest F. Cole. However, there is no record of Mae Cole dying. Consequently, there is a good possibility that Forest and Mae were not married. He appears in 35 trees. I have sent emails to Tree Managers that look active. No idea if this will get us any closer to Lois. But...what the hey?

Jim, you have learned a lot about your family that you knew essentially nothing about. Keep poking at these records, keep asking questions, and we will find answers.
Thank you to all that have been suggesting ideas. Finding out what happened to Jim's adopted sisters has been an exciting quest. This group has pulled together to offer suggestions, research leads, and to provide encouragement. I am so impressed.
Have you tried the records at FindMyPast.com?

I wonder if Mae was actually a nickname for Mary or Margaret?
Could you share a link to a tree for this family on FamilySearch or Ancestry?

She was listed as Mae on marriage license and most divorce proceedings in early 1900s.

I don’t think it would help with Lois. But please ask him to visit Kilby Family Tree. JFK’s mother was a Murray.
