Ok... so this looks like a possible option for folks (adults) who would like to access their birth records/adoption info in Oklahoma (depending on what you can afford and/or are willing to spend). I’m not sure if they’re saying you’re REQUIRED to pay the $600+ or if you only need to pay the $20, and then the other is an option? This could possibly be an option for you @Jim Kilby and @John JohnRigler1

It says “The person who is the subject of the search must sign an agreement that they wish to be found.” Needless to say, Lois died years ago.

Right but it goes on to say what happens (or may happen) if they’ unable to locate the person or if the person has died. Either way, it wouldn’t hurt to give them a call and see what it’s all about.

I just phoned the office. Waiting for a call back. They said they had a legal division where I might be able to have a judge unseal the records. Waiting for a call from them as well.

I don't think this Kilby is related. On a side note, I contacted the DHS to see how I can get the adoption records unsealed by a judge. Awaiting a call back. I think this is the only avenue we have left.

The census said he was a resident of Hughes county in 1910. I've never heard of my father being in Hughes County. I have requested a copy of the divorce decree of James Franklin and May. There is actually 3 documents the clerk found. One mentions the girls being taken away and cared by a third person. I'll let you know more when the documents arrive.

Yeah those will give the details. That’s how I found out my grandfathers adopted half sister had a sibling somewhere. When their mother divorced their father she told how he didn’t work and kept them in the poor house with their daughter .. the state took her away then shortly after that they had a child while at the poor house which the state took away.

I noticed that too, the Hughs county, and when I tried to research this “son” the Records I found said he was British but 🤷🏻♀️i dont know🤷🏻♀️. I noticed that, there’s the daughter wirh bethel ... which I believe Records say she wouldve had to have been born 1915...🤷🏻♀️i dont know🤷🏻♀️

My mother Minnie Mae Kilby (maiden Bandy). Born 1910, died 2000.

They may shut me down as well. I’ll let you know what they say. Everyone associated with the adoption from Court Clerk to Lois is dead. I can’t see the harm.
0 -
That’s what I said too about my grandfather I mean he was born in 1912, all the adults that dealt with his adoption are long gone. I don’t see what the Harm would be to let me have the records and info. It’s so annoying

X24mom: Sorry the Court pages are written by lawyers. You pay the $20 to get on the registry. If you don't hear anything for 6 months then you may pay for their Confidential Intermediary Search program. That costs $400 for the first parent and another $200 if you want them to search for both parents. Regardless of the results, you do not get your money back.
I talked to a friend who practices family law in KS. She had a court open an adoption file about 20 years ago. But she doubts it could be done now because you have to provide a compelling reason for opening your file. Wanting to know if any biological relative has curly hair or was an artist, etc. would never be enough. And today you can get a DNA test through the mail for $200 and know your heritage and genetic profile. She couldn't think of an argument she could use today because the main reasons they were opened in the past was medical info. She referred me to this site: https://deaconessadoption.org/how-to-unseal-closed-adoption-records-in-oklahoma/

Thank you so much @Rene Greer Williams ! How wonderfully kind of you to do that! I don’t think there’s a chance or getting my grandfathers adoption info either and that registry probably won’t do me any good either since everyone is long gone.... and that’s way too much money for me to put out there on a “chance”. I did speak with the deaconess people. I talked to wonderful lady named Kristen (I think that was her name) she spent a good amount of time on the phone with me recounting some of the horror stories of some folks who try to get records open, said folks have traveled there in hopes to get them, paid tons of money for various forms etc, paid attnys etc and still got sent home empty handed (she was referring to Oklahoma in general -not Deaconess) so then I talked to another lady who runs a fb group for Oklahoma adoptees, and she basically related the same kind info to me. I just wish someone could explain to me why it’s such a big deal if everyone involved has been dead for some time .... I mean it’s been more than 100 years. I just don’t understand where there would be a problem with that. If they don’t wanna give me the records then, at least give me some clues from it lol 😂

@X24mom still looking but dead end after dead end. I thought if I had the birth a certificate it would provide a middle name and birth date. I called Oklahoma Vital Records. For me to get the birth certificate, I need to have a copy of the death certificate. Needless to say that's impossible. She did tell me after 125 years, all birth records are public. I'm still looking but running out of places to look.

Yeah, and if she was adopted, and they changed her name.. that’s gonna be what you get on the birth certificate. Don’t give up. I’ve been doing this for the past 15-20 years ... and kept hitting dead end after dead end, the only new info I’ve gotten in prob 10 years was just a few months ago with the help of @Janell L Vasquez and @Carolyn Webber they helped me find the orphanage info and that at least got me his middle name and the dates he was there. ... keep your head up! We’ll have a breakthrough

Oh and Jim, are you certain she was born in 1911? And did you say someone told you that she was in the care of relatives? Because I found a Lois Bingman born in pottawammie county in 1908 I think

JimKilby, your story just gets more exciting with every detail!
You can see the 1910 Census at FamilySearch! https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RK7-8J?i=3&cc=1727033&personaUrl=/ark:/61903/1:1:ML31-RVK
Also, notice the family that was enumerated just before them. They look like they have Kilby/Killy family members in their household too.

The only indication of age is the newspaper article. It was dated July 29, 1916 and says she is 5 years old.

I had my DNA tested on both 23andme and Ancestry.com. I just emailed all those listed as first and 2nd cousin on Ancestry. I had done the same on 23andme.

Have you played around with the “search” function in your ancestry dna info?
0 -
JimKilby, how many centiMorgans of DNA did you share with your predicted first and second cousins? Do you think that you know how these cousins fit in your tree? DNA can give you so many clues! I am excited for you to have multiple first and second cousin matches.

Also Jim did you see my message about Lois L Bingaman?
