Anyone researching ancestors who fought in the Civil War? Have you tried this free site? Research, American Battlefield Trust? https://www.battlefields.org/learn/collections/research

They can be a little confusing, I have many ancestors with the same name and live in close proximity to each other, without knowing more abut the ancestor than I know sometimes I can't figure out which record goes to which man.

This is where having that notebook and keeping a page by last name, last and first name, or Place comes in handy!! Often it is the same person. With military units etc who were almost wiped out, or if people became ill then went back... the unit changed! I know talk about difficult!! So if John Smith started in one Company, let’s say A, Unit B.. B is wiped out or decimated and he is re-enlisted in C!! Then you have volunteers who could go back home and they ended up being in different group. I have some family that is actually the same person who enlisted as John then is in as John T, then is in as JT.... Thouh through some dedicated searching, LOTS of printing they can be found. If I can offer help, not saying I can unravel the mystery, I would be happy to help!
