mtDNA?
I hit a brick wall trying to find my 2x great-grandmother's maiden name. I can't find it anywhere and I've been looking for decades. I did an autosomal DNA test with Ancestry 3 years ago and have literally thousands of shared matches. I'm wondering if I do an mtDNA test with another company if it would help me zero in on her. She is my mother's father's father's mother.
My ancestry is totally Northern European; no Jewish or other minority shows up.
I did upload my raw DNA results up to GEDMatch but after that I got confused and don't know what I can do there.

I just wonder if you have your DNA connected to your tree on Ancestry
Although "Thru lines" is based on others in your family tree connections it may be helpful in finding a name I have seen ancestors in mine that I do not have in my tree connections but following the others that connect can lead to some info on the family connection
I am also confused by Gedmatch so not much help there

I'll check that out - thanks!

Using the "Leeds Method" may help you identify the matches that are related to that side of your family. The shared matches may have trees that identify common ancestors. With northern European ancestry, I recommend moving your raw DNA results to MyHeritage. It is based in Israel and has lots of European DNA results. I would be happy to help you with your DNA search, if you would be willing to share your AncestryDNA results with me. My AncestryDNa email is bryajw2@hotmail.com.

While mtDNA can be useful, it will not help you find the 2ggrandmother you described - mtDNA only traces back the matrilineal line (mother's mother's mother's, line). Your best bet is to pursue the atDNA matches, combined with further research to find documentary evidence (DNA is useless without that research.)
