I found this Mungo Collins in FamilySearch (actually the only Mungo Collins in FamilySearch): https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/97DJ-M5J

Evidently he passed away in 1893, which means there would be no US Census data for him with potential emigration information (as I doubt he is on the few surviving 1890 census records).

 

I did some sleuthing and also found a record for a 21-year-old "Mingo" Collins on Ancestry's collection "New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957". He arrived in New York from Scotland on January 19 1887.

 

Looking at the original image, I think the entry definitely says "Mungo" and not "Mingo". He was traveling with two other individuals around his age, as well as 52-year-old "Jeanette" Collins, which, judging from Mungo's gravestone, is probably his mother Janet. (No mention of his father on the passenger list; maybe he came over before or after his wife and children.)

 

Also, the last column on the page has a list of places, and the previous page shows that the column heading is Last Residence. Ayr is listed as the last place of residence for the Collins family.

 

I've gone ahead and reunited Mungo with his charm.

 

What a touching memento given to a young man by friends who were probably sad to see him go. I wonder if they ever found out about his passing just a few short years later in Pennsylvania.
