This is the register of Swiss Surnames. It is a related link found in the Swiss Citizenship site. This might be a good place to start. If you have the name(s) and date(s) of who you are looking for you may find a lot of information here, in Family Search, or one of the other sites connected to Family Search.

Edna, the information that you need to request a Civil Registration record in Bern is given on the FS Wiki article, Switzerland Civil Registration. It is very informative. When you look under the section, "Finding the Civil Registration Office" click on the link given. You will enter the town where the family was living, as well as the Heimat, which will bring up which office you need to contact. When you write to them, you will need to show that you are a direct descendent.
Hope this helps.

Danette - Your answer is exactly what I needed. However, I'm afraid the information I want is not as a direct descendent. My grandmother left Switzerland in 1888 and died here in Ohio in 1889 leaving 7 orphaned children. Her unmarried brother took care of the children and raised them to adulthood in Montana. I very am desirous of receiving a Civil Registration record for three of her siblings who remained in Switzerland. Their relationship would be as one grandaunt and two granduncles. Do you think there is any possibility I could be granted the family registers for them? They were all born in Bern and died respectively in 1882, 1913, and 1917. I do appreciate your help now and the help you have given me in the past. Edna

Hello Edna,
All of the information in the FS Wiki states that you must be a direct descendent. I recently requested a family register for my Grandmother's family and created my own pedigree to show my relationship. In the end, they sent the invoice in an 11 page document, including a Stammbaum (Pedigree chart) to fill out for future inquiries. So it seems to me that a direct pedigree is what they will accept. However, I don't see any harm in requesting the registers for your grandaunt and uncles. All they can do is tell you no.
Have you already requested the register for your grandmother as a wife? And as a child? Perhaps asking for direct line first would be helpful??
Does anyone else have any advice for this question?
