I am searching for the parents and siblings of my great, great grandfather, Dr. Reuben D. Black born
Johnson Co. Mo. A male cousin and I have done our DNA tests. We both have DNA matches with other Black lines and his DNA matches have a higher cM match than mine, but none of our matches has connected us to another Black line. I have read the data on every Black surname looking for Reuben with no luck. Where do I go from here?

what type of DNA tests were these ? (which company and what DNA test type?)
Here is the Black Family Surname group at Familytree DNA

Both tests were are with Ancestry. My Family tree is the Black-Smith Tree in Ancestry. I don't know the "type" of test they do. I had the cousin do his test thinking he would have the male gene from Reuben and I have gotten completely different matches for him that I have from mine.

Ancestry does not do a "male" test (YDNA)
so your male cousin would probably have taken the same test as you
but for trying to trace a surname line - I suggest a YDNA test (which Ancestry doesnt offer)
you can try FamilytreeDNA (for your male cousin - assuming he is surname BLACK)
but tell me more about the matches you did have with Ancestry - using their autosomal test.

His surname is Black, that's why I asked him to do the test. He is an elderly man I only met once; not sure I could ask him to do another test.
The highest cM match for him so far is from Jerry Black 50cM, 2 segments: Thomas Benjamin Black 1741 NC = 1779 Ruthford, NC. Sons: John Black 1765 NC, Ephriam Black 1767-1843 NC, Thomas Gillespie Black 1770, Robert Black 1773, John Black 1776 NC-1822 Knox, KY, John B. Black 1880 VA, Samuel Black. Next generation, from John B. Black: son Robert Black 1822 MO. Next generation from Robert Black: Moody Sankey Black 1876 Lincoln, MO
The highest cM match in my DNA is Idavison Tree 33cM, 1 segment: James Black 1784 KY-1840 MO, son Jeremiah Black 1823-1919 MO. Jeremiah's son James William Black 1854-1922 MO and James daughter Maude Eunis Black 1893-1961. This Idavison match is also in the cousin's matches with 16cM, 1 segment which is about half of my cM. I don't understand why the cousin's cM would be half as much as mine?

yes - but if he took the test with Ancestry DNA - it would not be a YDNA (Male line ) test
if what you are trying to do is match to a specific surname DNA - then you need to take a YDNA test
which is the one at Familytree

Can I (a female) take the Familytree DNA YDNA test or does it need to be the male cousin?

YDNA is the male line DNA - which travels along the surname line from father to son - so no you cant take it - but you can have a male sibling or cousin take it.
