I have browsed thru this book. It doesn't address the orphanages that were run by other churches such as Germantown Lutheran Orphanage. It does talk about the Catholic run orphanage. But there were many others by different religous groups

@Cynthia Susan Law Yes there are many books about different places. I stumbled across this one and found it interesting and useful especially for those who may be researching the subject/location. If you’re looking for info on Germantown Orphanages, I believe I have a list of links I saved, I will find and post here I will tag you 😊

In researching my orphan GF I have read horrific stories written by adults who had been orphan children. The worst story was written by an adult about his orphanage stay in the 1920's. He was made to eat food with worms/bugs, rotten food and worst yet eat his own vomit. Than other boys housed in underground tunnels of Phil. PA who shoveled coal into furnaces for the city steam heat. They didn't see the light of day and slept by the furnances and piles of coal on beds of rags...photos posted. All these stories upset me so much I stopped looking into the orphanages in PA

The stories are just awful. I’ll never understand how a person or group of people could be so cold and heartless to other living beings. Especially innocent children. I read about an orphanage in Massachusetts that had dead bodies in the rooms and the other people had to step over them etc., the “inmates” were tasked with sewing expensive clothes for the employees, horrible living conditions and one case where someone was skinned and the skin sold to a tannery. Just cruel and awful and sad

Wow! These are awful stories about what happened to children in the orphanages. It is painful to think about children being treated this way. I have also read about the terrible living conditions of not only orphans, but children living with their families in New York. Many lived in tenements with poor ventilation, no toilet facilities, and in terribly cramped conditions. Young children were forced to work at home from very young ages. I remember seeing photos of very young children working all day making artificial flowers.
Look at some of the images by Jacob Riis:

I am very grateful that neither I, nor my children, have had to endure these struggles.
