Short Answers: 'Yes'; and, 'No'.
.
If you are new to "Genealogy" / "Family History" ...
.
You will need to add yourself and your immediate "Living" Family members; and, you will, also need to add any "Deceased" generations following that are NOT already recorded in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".
.
For many, that is not too many generations.
.
There is NO 'Quick' way to do "Genealogy" / "Family History".
.
"Genealogy" / "Family History" is NOT quick or easy.
.
Start with yourself and work backwards from there, take your time, do it right.
.
Enter (ie. "Create") the individuals/persons in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" one at a time - on a one by one basis.
.
Many of the latter individuals/persons (ie. Generations) most probably ALREADY exist in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".
.
Use the "Find" facility/function/feature to Search "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch", you may be surprised to find some (if not, many) of your latter generations already there.
.
Be patient.
Take your time.
It is not a 'sprint', it is a 'marathon'.
.
Whereas, if you are new to "Genealogy" / "Family History" ...
.
Do you already have a 'Pedigree' in the form of an 'on-line' or a 'standalone' database?

Thanks for the response, I’ve been doing Family History for some years. I have a tree on Family Tree Maker, which has a link to both Ancestry and Family Search. I have over 2000 people on the tree so this would take some time to put each person on to Family Search.

Not necessarily.
.
You may find that many of your later Ancestral generations are already in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".
.
Have you even looked in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" to see if any of your Ancestors are already in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch"?
.
If some of your Ancestors are already in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" you will NOT need to "Add" them from you personal database.
.
As I already indicated, use the "Find" facility/function/feature to Search "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch", you may be surprised to find some (if not, many) of Ancestors already there.
.
You may only need to add yourself and your immediate "Living" Family members; plus, a generation or two; as, some (if not, many) of Ancestors may already be there.
.
2000 individuals/person in your own personal database is really not that many. Many of us have quite a lot more.
.
"Genealogy" / "Family History" is about "Quality"; and certainly NOT, "Quantity".
.
If you have your own personal database, that is fine, keep; and, maintain, that.
.
"Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" is all about a SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us - it is about "Collaboration".
.
We do not have our OWN "Tree" in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".
.
We ONLY have "Branches", that are interconnected, in this SINGLE "One" World "Tree", for all of us.
.
"Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" is NOT like "Ancestry_com" or the like.
.
We DO NOT have "Private"/"Personal" 'Trees' in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" like other "Web" Sites; and/or, 'standalone' personal programmes.
.
We do not even, own; or, manage; and, are NOT even responsible for, the "Deceased" individuals/person in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".
.
"Family Tree" of "FamilySearch" is built on a "Open Edit" Platform - hence, why any registered User/Patron can "Edit" (ie. Add, Delete; and/or, Change) ANY "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of "FamilySearch".
