How to create shared family trees for only one half of the tree?
Is it possible to share a family tree for just one side of the tree? When I try can create this by adding a tree, all my deceased ancestors are already checked and greyed out, so I can't even unselect them?

A shared family tree is a group of profiles for living people that all the members in that group can see. It does not contain any deceased ancestors.
All your deceased ancestor profiles are in the general public portion of Family Tree that all users can see. There is no need to create duplicates of deceased people by copying them into a shared tree because everyone in the group, along will all other users, can already see them and work in those profiles together.
If for some reason you do not want members of your group to be able to track the relationship of a living profile in your shared tree to that profile's deceased ancestors in the public tree easily, you can alway delete the relationship of that living person to his or her deceased parents. But I'm not sure why you would want to do that.
Remember, we do not have personal trees in Family Tree, there is just the one, universal tree even though there are some portions, our personal living entries and the living entries in any groups we belong to, that only we can see.

You can limit a Family Group Tree to one side of the family, as @Gordon Collett stated, by deleting the relationship between someone and their parents…for example if you only want to show your side of the tree, delete the relationship between your husband and his parents (just in that particular Family Group Tree!) and then only your connection to deceased ancestors will show. This can be useful when you are working with a group of cousins who don't really need any information on the other side of the family.
