Place name changes
I found baptisms, marriages, and funerals in the church books from Schmedenstedt, Peine, Lower Saxony. Ancestry and FamilySearch have some of the same records from Klein Ilsede, Peine. I haven't been able to find anything when I search those sites for Schmedenstedt. How do I know what to search for with this variety of names for the same place?
On a related issue, FamilySearch doesn't have "Lower Saxony" as an option for a German State. Will "Hanover" get me the same info?

and are two different villages that each had their own Protestant parish according to Meyers. But both villages were part of the Catholic parish. So where you should look depends upon whether you are looking for Catholic or Protestant records. But also keep in mind that sometimes the parish for a village changed over time. The Meyers data is only one snapshot in time. So if you cannot find data for a village in one parish record it never hurts to check out nearby parish records.
According to Meyers both villages were part of Hanover but here again that might change depending on time frame.

There are digitized records for Schmedenstedt at archion.de, which is for Protestant records only. I was also unable to find anything for Schmedenstedt in the FamilySearch catalog. According to Meyer's Gazetteer, the Catholic records for the town are in Peine, and the Protestant records are in Schmedenstedt.
