Illegitimacy in early 1800s (Catholic) North Rhine, Westphalia

In researching my family who resided in Hürth, Erftkreis (near Cologne), I came across some people who had illegitimate children, and of those some married after they had a child or sometimes two. I understand that it was not uncommon and that marriage was more an economic one, than social. I have been unable to find anything specific, in terms of why this happened in this specific area. Was it the local government that had to give permission, and men needed to demonstrate that they could afford to provide for a family? I'd be appreciative if someone who might know further information about this area might be able to provide additional information. Thanks so much.
