EKMD, Evangelische Kirche in Mitteldeutschland
Hello German Community,
Thank you in advance for your suggestions. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with the EKMD, Evangelische Kirche in Mitteldeutschland.
My husband’s ancestors lived in Ehrenhain (Ehrenhain, Altenburg, Sachsen-Altenburg, Germany) between 1700 - 1800 and I would like to find the records. I sent an email to the pastor at the Evangelical Lutheran Ehrenhain Parish Office. Her replies have me confused, so I am not sure where to look now.
Without copying the entire email trail, here is the short version of our correspondence:
The pastor at Ehrenhain indicated the documents for this period are available for purchase on the Internet through EKMD (Evangelische Kirche in Mitteldeutschland). I believe this is the correct URL: EKMD | www.ekmd.de
I found the “Liste der verfilmten Kirchenbücher – Stand Juli 2023” on the EKMD website. See Eisenach State Church Archives | Filmed church records (www-landeskirchenarchiv--eisenach-de.translate.goog) This page includes a note that the records are available on the Church Register portal at Archion.
I could not find them on Archion, so I contacted their Customer Support. Archion’s kind response was “Ehrenhain is unfortunately not yet online on Archion. Ehrenhain belongs to the Kirchenkreis Altenburger Land. This Kirchenkreis has not yet been submitted to us for import.”
At this point I contacted the pastor again and ask if she had an Internet address or URL of the site where the Ehrenhain records were located. Her response was to go to “the EKDM Archive Eisenach page. All our books are secured here and can be used as per request. I have already passed this on several times to interested parties and they have all found what they are looking for there.”
My German communications and webpages must all be translated through Google translate or DeepL, so maybe I have missed something on the EKDM page.
Is there someone who might be willing to look at the EKDM page and let me know where the link to the records is located?
Thank you very much,
Laurie Francis

Ehrenhain can be found on the list of filmed church books here: https://www.landeskirchenarchiv-eisenach.de/asset/lsZ3S9i8RuS3L3mCdcG3JA/sammelmappe1.pdf?ts=1690364146855
Search for "Ehrenhain" in the pdf file. However, this means only that they are available as microfilm in the archive, not online. You would probably need to visit the archive (
) and look at the films there. Or you need to hire a local researcher who can do this for you.0 -
Ulrich,
I did see Ehrenhain on the pdf list, and that the dates of the births, marriages and burials coincided with the time period I am looking at. What puzzled me was that the pastor at Ehrenhain was sure other researchers had been able to access and purchase the Ehrenhain parish records online.
I will have a close look at the Archiv und Bibiothek page link you provided. Thank you.
Laurie
