Derrick family origin in Germany
My Derrick family arrived in Georgia from Germany in 1738. The father died on the way over and the mother was listed as the widow Derrick. They had 4 children, Elizabeth age 8, Melchior age 7, Jacob age 5, and Margaret age 1. I've been searching for a very long time to document the names of the parents and find out where in Germany they came from. Any ideas or help would greatly be appreciated.

As far as I know, there as a large group of emigrants from Salzburg who came to Georgia in the 1730s. There were several waves of emigration, and not all of the people were from Salzburg, but also other surrounding areas. This link provides lists of passengers in various waves, and about 3/4 of the way down, there is a Derick family listed as part of the third Palatine transport.

Thank you so much for your response. That is indeed the family that I'm trying to find out where they came from. I've already been to the Georgia Salzburger society. They didn't have any info that helped.

The challenge is that Der[r]ick is not a very common name in Germany. If you look at this map,

you can see that there are only a few areas where the name appears with any frequency. If you hover your mouse over the yellow areas, it will tell you what Kreis this represents. You can then start to poke around in this areas and see if you have any luck with Der[r]icks in the 1700s.

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K1GW-VD8 is likely the same person - with some contradicting info about his wife and wedding date - which just shows again, that online trees (whatever platform) are very useful to help you start your search, but data shouldn't be copied without checking the original records.
