From my grandpa's notes- Charles G. Szirkoskie, born in Poland about 1800. He had an interesting history, was a refugee into Prussia, probably with Napoleon's retreat from Moscow, raised by a wealthy Prussian family, rose to high position in the Prussian army, as a General. Lost favor, probably in one of the German revolts, fled to United States, married Susan Gordon Humphrey, of pioneer Illinois family, and lived and died as a trader at Belleville, the oldest town in Illinois.

Are these two different people?
As far as ancestor Charles is concerned, did your grandpa have any documentation/ sources listed in his notes?
And as for Emil Swiss - was he born in Dernau in 1833? May be I m just not awake yet, but I would appreciate it, if you would provide some more details and clarification. Any sources you have on either person would be very helpful. Thank you!

Thank you for reaching out to me. Rereading my question, I can see I was very unclear. Charles G. Szirkoskie is as i have come to discover is Charles Ludwig Szirkowsky. He landed in Baltimore, MD from Germany and moved to St. Louis, MO in 1836.
I found this information on the internet about him- http://www.ahr-eifel-rhein.de/grafiken/Neues/1833%20Sterbeurkunde%20Michel%20Schweizer%20Juden%20Dernau.pdf
My grandfather didn't have any documentation. I have found some census in Franklin, Illinois where he met and married my 3 great grandmother. I also found a book in the Family History Library in SLC that had a paragraph mentioning him where I got more hints about his life.
I haven't done any research in Germany so I am not sure where to look next.
