Here's the definition for Bahnwärter from Grimms Wörterbuch (yes, the same guys who did the fairytales)-

Bahnwärter m. an bahnübergängen für das öffnen u. schließen der bahnschranke zuständiger wärter: 1844 die nächtliche bewaffnung der bahnmeister und bahnwärter auf den eisenbahnen
