Hello Trish,
Regarding your question: "on these records that have one date--is it considered a birth or a baptism record?"
Since baptism was more important to the church than birth dates and because this is a church register, when a record such as this has only one date, you can assume that this is the date of baptism.

Thank you for that clarification. I will need to make corrections on my records for those that only had one date.
Would you be able to translate this record? I have no idea on the date recorded on that right side other than what I assume is a 6 by the month. I tried to darken the image. Perhaps the link will help to discern the names in the witness section.

The date is: 6 October (hopefully you know what the year is).
I'll translate what I can decipher for you. Please tell me where this record is from in Germany (parish or village) as that will help with the place names in the sponsor statement.

The majority of my record requests are in Greifenstein, Wetzlar, Rhineland, Prussia. I am beginning to think there are family connections to the whole village LOL. Sorry I forgot the link to it--Left column

I do not have an Archion account so I can only work from the image you provided:
Child: Johan Philip (or possibly "Philips" which is a variant of the name "Philip/Philipp").
Parents: Johan Adam, cook?, and wife (wife is not named).
Sponsors:
Johann Ebert H_______ from H_______
Philips ________ from D_________
Anna Agatha, wife of Niclas H_________
Hanß Conrad __________
Catharina Juliana ____________
Date: 6 October.
