Immigration info
According to passport application Gerhard Neuhaus came to United States March 1882. I can't find any information on where he arrived at. I believe he left from Antwerp. His wife and children came in September 1882 to Ellis Island.
I am hoping to find if he arrived with any relatives. He was going to Ohio to work in coal mines.
I have checked several places but no answers.

Ellis Island only opened in 1892. Before that date, New York arrivals were at Castle Garden.
Earlier manifests have less information to help us differentiate between similarly-named people. And later records referencing an arrival date/year are not always accurate. He would not have needed to prove when he arrived, and his memory may have been faulty.

Another possibility is that he may have entered the US via New Orleans and then come up the Mississippi to the Ohio River. A circuitous route, but worth looking into.

Or through Canada. Fares to Canada were often less expensive than fares to New York.
