Searching for Great Grandfather
I have been at a brick wall trying to find information on my Great Grandfather and his family for years. I have only a few documents. Wedding certificate, death certificate, and some census records. The only birthplace listed is Hesse Germany. No city is given. His father's name is given, but his mother's name is either left blank or listed as unknown. Any ideas. Illegitimate, or adopted. Suspect a name change when came to America. Any suggestions.
Louis Aller DOB 8/6/1865, death 2/27/1942. Came to USA in 1882. Settled in Detroit Michigan. His father's name is John P. Aller, mothers name is listed as unknown.

@Cat Woman 46 The 1900 census shows he was naturalized and naturalization documents should have his town of birth. I couldn't find him in Michigan naturalization indexes on FamilySearch, but that doesn't mean the records don't exist. Have you found him on a passenger list? If so, who did he immigrate with? Can you research another family member, friend or acquaintance who may have come from the same area in Germany?

DNA testing could also give clues to his parentage. AncestryDNA has the largest database. You can move your DNA raw data from there to MyHeritage, which has a better database for those of European ancestry.
