Help with finding town/city of ancestor's birth in Germany
I am helping a ward member with FamilySearch. One ancestor, found in US Censuses, Charles Majerus/Majeras was born in Germany 1854 and emigrated to US in 1872. We've looked in the indexed ship manifests during year of 1872 in major ports of east coast US and New Orleans, but have not found him. Could anyone help us with this, to find town/city he is from?

If the year of arrival is as stated in the census, or even in a naturalization record, don't take it as gospel. Memory fades; people subtract incorrectly. Don't limit your search to a single year.

Set up a 20 minute consultation with someone in U.S./Canada immigration research. Sign in to Familysearch.org, click "?" in the circle at the top left of the page, , click ”Contact Us”, scroll down and click ”FIND IN-PERSON HELP”, scroll down and click ”SCHEDULE NOW”, click ”United States and Canada”, click ”United States Ancestors”, and set up a time for the 20 minute Zoom consultation. There is no charge for this.
Try to find a death/burial record. Try German church records in the United States if he was Catholic or Lutheran. Try ward records if he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

If he was born in Germany, it's highly likely that his name was Karl and he used Charles only after coming to the US. So look for Karl Majerus in the passenger lists.

The name "Majerus" is quite uncommon. In Germany, there seem to be just a few occurences in the border region to Luxembourg, see https://nvk.genealogy.net/map/1890:majerus
On Ancestry there are more hits of the name in Luxembourg than in Germany (despite the more than 100 times smaller population). This seems to indicate that the origin of the name is in fact Luxembourg.
