Are civil birth names commonly different from the names given at christening?
I received a record hint for an individual who was born after 1792, in 1803. It was a parish record of christening, which I thought was interesting, because I'd not ever seen a parish record, digitized, indexed, or otherwise, after 1792. The given name in this parish record is Jean Louis Cyprien. My civil birth registration for this individual had only the given name of Louis Cyprien.
Fast forward, and I'm now working on another family that has me completely baffled due to differences in given names to which they are referenced in the civil records to the point that I'm having a hard time figuring out who is who. My question is: could the differences be attributed to a different/additional given christening name that was not used for the civil birth registration (as evidenced in the record I referenced), but is used for subsequent marriage, children's birth, and death records. Does that make sense?
If this be the case, my second question is: is it possible for me to access the parish registers for years after 1792 in any way? I'm not sure why/how that first record to which I referred is digitized, indexed, and available on FamilySearch, as I can't even access it (or just don't know how) on the Department of Ardeche archives.
As a side here, the digitized/indexed record is attributed to the incorrect place. How do I report that? Is this the right community to answer that question?
