Looking for a birth record

I have been trying to find a birth record for an ancestor. He was born in the town of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom during the beginning of the 1800's. The only records that I have of this ancestor being from Bury St Edmunds is his marriage record.

What should I know about the town to find the birth records?

If he was born before 1837. you are unlikely to find birth records. Your best hope is a church christening record. For information on Bury St Edmunds, see the wiki article

Just because he was married there does not mean he was born there, Marriages usually take place in the parish of the bride so, unless they both came from Bury St Edmunds, it is more likely that he came from elsewhere. Have you found him on any census records?

Something else that may help is that Bury St Edmunds is sometimes known as StEdmundsbury just to be confusing!
