I would suggest DNA testing at 23andme and Ancestry. You might get a close match to work with, maybe.
Also look for any immigration paperwork or records.
My daughter in law was adopted, I was able to find her mother and I flew to Aomori and met her. So it is possible, but it will be a major project. I am still working on the family tree. Not long after I met her we lost contact due to the covid deal.

Do you have an account in Ancestry? I found a Kazuo Yamagishi who died in 1974 in Japan in Ancestry.
If you do not have an Ancestry account, you can go to a FamilySearch Center and use their portal to access Ancestry for free. To find the Public Member Accounts, follow these instructions.
- Click on "Search" at the top
- Click on "Public Member Trees"
- Enter "Kazuo Yamagishi" and click "Search"
You can contact the person who entered this information by clicking on their name. The person at the FamilySearch Center will be able to help you. To find the FamilySearch Center closest to you:
- Click the map icon
- Click "Discover a Local Center"
- A map will show with the locations
