Not all Historical Events need to be listed on the timeline.
Please leave off events such as the creation of Montenegro and even when the continental congress started meeting. Big events such as the declaration of Independence, creation of the state that the person is from, earthquake of 1812 in New Madrid (if from that area) are all great. Obscure happenings only muddy the waters. Only important events are important to that area should be listed. Family History is about finding people.
My person is from TN why is this listed as an event?
Historical Event • Age 24
Montenegro was acknowledged as an independent principality.

The timeline has been very beneficial in my research: the events of historical data is interesting, but doesn't need to be in the person's timeline, unless it has a personal value in that person's life, and we can add that data ourselves.
Also, I print out the time lines when I am trying to fill a gap in someone's life. On the new page layout I am unable to print out the entire time line, unless, I could snip it in sections, save them and try to put it together. It only shows part of it at a time. PLEASE, let the timeline be accessible on one page, and possible have it in parts for your page layout. The timeline the way it is now works really well!
Sincerely,
Jeanie Kohntopp 😊

Showing Historic Events (such as the creation of Montenegro) is optional. On the About tab of the New Person Page, top right on Time Line, click show, and uncheck Historic Events.

I agree with the original poster that some attempt should be made to only display historical events that are geographically/politically relevant to the individual; e.g. only events that occurred in the nation or political subdivision (state, province, prefecture, etc.) where an individual's family was living at the time (or at least during some point in their life). So a person lives in Tennessee in late 18th and early 19th century? Great! Display events such as Tennessee Statehood, prominent battles from the War of 1812, or the resolution of the dispute concerning the Walker Line. Say a person served as an airplane mechanic during WW-I, include events such as the first sustained flight. This could be more generally catered to include important developments related to any profession.

I wish the Timeline default display was limited to events from the person's life--rather than including unrelated Historical Events from other parts of the world. For instance, my Tennessee ancestor's timeline displays totally irrelevant Russian events. The screen is already way too cluttered. I don't think that billions of users should have to figure out how to turn off Historical Events to get rid of unwanted data pushed on them by Family Search--information that they didn't ask to see in the first place. This is simply a bad default choice. Please add a button that allows users to "opt in" to Historical Events--rather than forcing billions to declutter their screen of irrelevant Historical World Events by "opting out."

Option exists already. Click Show to display the options.

Thank you for your comments and examples. I've submitted a bug report on the service providing the timeline data. This is a different curation of events than has been done in the past, it will take some time to refine the results for every time period and place.
