Looking for any information on my great grandfather Elisha Hurlburt. He was born approx 1831 in Ne
The only information I have for certain is that he married Eunice Harroun in 1856 in Brodhead, Green, Wisconsin, USA. They had 6 children and he died in 1878 in Brodhead, Green, Wisconsin, USA. I found some information that could be his saying he was born in South Bristol, Orange County, New York, USA. I have no proof this was his actual birth place or any other family information on him. Could someone direct me where to research more about him. I have gone on Geni, My Heritage, Ancestry and only getting the same information. Thanks in advance.

Where did you get the information that he was from South Bristol, Orange County, New York? You could try looking at his land deeds when he was a grantee in Green County, sometimes these will list where someone came from before. You could try old county histories of Green County to see if they give any clues.
If you can pinpoint where he came from in New York, you look for possible fathers in the census records and see if you can connect them through the deeds, probate records, or other records.
You may not find an actual document that lists his parents specifically, but hopefully you can find sufficient clues to have a strong theory.

HI Jeniann. Thanks for your help. To tell you the truth, I only really know he was born in US state and on one of the sites I have looked at, there seemed to be a possibility of him born there. I am a novice at this so how would I go about looking at old county histories of Green County? I have tried through census reports to come up with Elisha Hurlburt and have had no luck. My information on him primarly came from a family history books and other relatives through Ancestry.com and their relatives. I have no idea how to look for deeds, probate records or land deeds. Thanks for your time. Sheryl McPhee

Hi Sheryl,
The census records before 1850 only list the head of the household, so you're not going to likely find him by name until 1850. In the 1840 census, he will be a tally mark under his father's household and not listed by his own name.
If you've only looked on Ancestry.com and received information from relatives so far, there are lots of other places that you can look.
There are some digitized histories for Green County in the Wisconsin Historical Society online collections:
Also on Archive.org there's another one:
https://archive.org/details/historyofgreenco00unio
The land deeds are in the Family History Library collections: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/633247?availability=Family History Library . Some are digitized online and some are not yet. The ones not digitized can only be accessed in the Faily History Library in Salt Lake City. FamilySearch is in the process of digitizing all of them and all will digitized in the next year or two. It looks like the original books are also available in the county courthouse in Monroe, so you could go there also to view them.
The probate records for Wisconsin are available on Ancestry.com: https://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=9088 .
The probate records for New York are also available on Ancestry.com. You would need to pinpoint a county first, though, for it to be helpful: https://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=8800 .
The Wisconsin Historical Society has a number of records that could be helpful: https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/
This sites has some links to other good resources for Green County: https://ldsgenealogy.com/WI/Green-County.htm
Hope this helps,
Jeniann

Where is he in the 1860 census records by the way? I did a quick check and I'm not seeing him, but I didn't look super closely.
This may be him in the 1850 census, but you would need to investigate this guy further to see if it's him : https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenancestry&indiv=try&h=11854331

Jeniann, I so appreciate all your efforts with the above links to websites where I can look. I did do some research with the 1850 census and other than Elisha's birthdate not being 1831 and 1826 instead, there is a possibility his father's name is Harry Hurlbert (which is spelled differently than Hurlburt). I did some research on Harry and got him in a few census with Elisha and a sister Lydia. I am going to do some more. Time being I put those into Ancestry.com and will see if any hints come my way.
Thanks again for your time and input to help me. Have a super day. Sheryl

Well the 1850 census I found is a possibility but could be another person as well, so I wouldn't assume it's him without more evidence. Good luck!
