Syncing of Memories items?
There are various 3rd party software applications that allow for "syncing" of a local database with FamilySearch Family tree.
(I use Roots Magic)
but do any of these syncing applications - allow for syncing of "MEMORIES" items
(images, pdf's etc)
the memories option is a great feature of Familytree
(But I really wish there was some (more automated) way to ensure I could keep a local copy of the images I had uploaded - without the huge tedious and error prone manual process)
(especially since for me - we are talking about tens of thousands of items)
(as an example - what would I ever do if my computer crashed - and I lost the local copy of all my images - - the only way to get them back would be to manually download them one by one)
seems like there should be a better way for people to retain or create a copy of items they have uploaded (a syncing memories feature would allow for this)
some downloadable report of what people the images had been linked to would also be very nice

Dennis, I think this is useful information for @Ancestor Treasures

yeh - unfortunately I think the answer is - there is no such thing.

I presume that you have added this note to the Feedback for Memories at familysearch.org?

I thought the rule was you can add data to FamilySearch one by one? There is a GEDCOM procedure but some have used it incorrectly. It will allow you to add data but only if you check to make sure the information is not duplicate. Some disobey the rules, then we have tons of useless duplicates. Many of the memories are duplicated now, wonder if and when they will be corrected. Since there is a limit to how many each individual in FS can have attached to his/her record, someday the limit will be reached and others will not be able to add more memories that are NOT duplicates.

Syncing is not the same thing as just a raw "GEDCOM" upload as we used to do.
Normally syncing will not create duplicates - if normal procedures are followed.
any limits on memories items are in the thousands of record per person - I wouldn't worry about hitting the limit simply due to duplication.
to many people syncing allows for you to keep and maintain a local copy of the data that is in FS without having to retype it into a local database.
the whole point of "syncing" is to avoid duplicate entry.

"sync"-ing (Synchronization) at a very high conceptual level - is simply the way that a set of records that are all related - can be kept in sync - even if entered across multiple locations or databases.
An example would be a deceased person who is both in a local Roots Magic database I have on my local PC (similar to the old PAF) and the same person is also recorded in FamilySearch Family Tree - and may even be in the local databases of other family members
Syncing allows for an update to be made in any of the multiple databases and flow to the others.
Doing so without creating duplicate person records.
Syncing as it applies to program like Roots Magic etc is only semi automated - and still requires a human record by record confirmation - which is a good thing.
You can also create local databases that are created fully automatically - based on a one time automated download through programs like Rootsmagic. again thus avoiding the double entry.

What does Permanent.org do? I saw that it has partnered with FS.

some sort of permanent data storage service
https://www.permanent.org/digital-archives/
but in my opinion "FamilySearch" is about as permanent as you can get . . .
I wonder what they offer that FS doesnt.

I believe Ancestral Quest let's you synch Memories. I know I can see Memories while I am synching and I can choose to download several.
also try to attach Memories on more than 1 site, Ancestry, My Heritage, Wikitree... and I try to keep family folders of memories in Google Photos/Drive.

This seems like such an important thread about Memories. I am going to invite the @Ancestors Treasures to share this post. Perhaps, we can get some additional information about this idea about syncing and downloading Memories.

cool - I will follow up on this lead and report back.

I just downloaded two pictures. It puts them into the Ancestral Quest scrapbook and into the folder I request on my computer. The only problem is that I don't have all my photos in the Ancestral Quest scrapbook. So I had to look at my own photo folders to be sure I didn't already have the picture. But that's my fault.
I am unclear whether that is essentially putting the same photo in two places on my computer or if Ancestral Quest is linking to folders and files on my computer.

Who or what is @Ancestors Treasures?

a group within FS Community (and thus the @ symbol)
see:

(the @ she used allowed her post to cross post to the Ancestor Treasures group

Cynthia, you asked a great question. We have a short cut way to share information between the many different groups within the Community. We can simply put the @ symbol in front of the group name or a persons name and the message is sent to them.
When I did this (we call it @mentioning) I shared this particular thread with the Ancestor Treasures group. In the Ancestor Treasures group, I post a weekly prompt that is meant to encourage group members to collect an ancestor's memories or to document their treasures to share with their family. We set a goal to add one memory a week throughout the year, but if they miss a week, they are encouraged to just try again next week.
Would you like to join this group? We would love to have you. I am happy to see new group members join. You already have a love for sharing memories, so I think that you would be an asset to the group. You can probably teach us some new tricks!

does ancestral quest let you pick a person in FS and then download all the descendants or ancestors of that person for a given number of generations?

When I sync a record I only see the ability to get parents, spouses and children. There might be another utility that I haven't discovered. I can add sources and tag them. I can click through to actually see the source. I can add notes, pictures, and stories which includes the life story at the beginning of the person page

what Im referring to is an export or download option - and not a sync option.
Roots Magic lets me download all the descendants or ancestors of person X

Yes, I looked in the help section and there is a function to import ancestors up to so many generations and import descendants to x generations. You can choose to get the spouses of the descendants or ancestors. It advises you to be sure that the records in Familysearch are correct.

Dennis- Have you checked out Permanent Legacy. org? What do you think of it? I received an email from them today. It said they have placed an app in the solutions gallery. I don't see one listed as of now.

I dont know anything about it?
what would it do that FamilySearch doesnt do?

Dennis - I also prefer Familysearch because it's free and I can store my photos and documents there. Unlimited?? I don't have a lot of those to store. Someone with a lot of files to store immediately might find the cost prohibitive at $10.00 a gigabite for permanent storage. For someone who can increase there storage as they need it and can afford it may find it useful.
I am looking at it as they allow public folders that can be reached by a link you share or searched for from the web without having to sign in to an account. It also syncs with Familysearch memories.
There is an article on the Family search blog in Nov 2019.
