French translation of 'Narrow'
I believe my great-grandfather came here from France in the early 1800s. What my grandfather (his son) told my mother is that their name was not 'Narrow' in France, but got changed when they went through the immigration process.
What he remembered is that it was a long name beginning with the letter 'B' and had lots of vowels and a few of the letter 'L' (I only made this uppercase so it would be clear what letter). He said the word meant 'a narrow ravine' or something similar.
Is there anyone who can offer any suggestions or possibilities?
Many thanks!

I like challenges but this one is more than difficult 😅
Narrow is a ravine and the only french word beginning by "B" is : " Bas fond" . But it does n't seem me very, very serious !
I will advise you to research with the birth certifiact of your grand father where you will find the name of his father and mother and later try with ellis island .
Good luck

I would suggest that you go to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and search in the following book:
One copy is in the reference books on B2 Floor. There is a second copy in the International book on B2 floor.
Check all the B surnames.
