Help in Identifying this Uniform
My ancestors are mainly in Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota. The came primarily from France, Luxembourg, and Germany.
We found this photo (not sure if it is my great-grandfather, Nicholas Bertamus (or Nicolas Bertemes in Luxembourg), and we cannot identfiy the uniform.
If anyone can assist in identifying this uniform, I thank you in advance.
I have posted to Luxembourg and Germany groups, but no luck.
Thanks,
Joan

I looked your ancestor up on FamilySearch, and was happy to find a well documented tree, as well as the civil registration record. I would create a timeline Nicholas' life. If he was born in 1869, and arrived in the US in 1889, that would put him at twenty. I will ask these questions for you to consider for your timeline.
- What wars could he have been in between the age of say 14 and 20, before coming to the US?
- Does this man in the picture look like he is 20 years old?
- Could this be another relative?
- Also, I noticed a missing 1910 census.
By way of suggestion, I recommend having the picture scanned and uploading it to one of those companies that sharpens and enhances old photographs. I would then check Facebook for groups who specialize in Uniform photographs. You will know a legitimate group if they require you to explain your reason for joining the group, and require you to maintain their standards.
I would check the internet for some archives in this area. I found one, the Luxemburger Nationalarchiv, that might have a contact for you to ask. https://portal.ehri-project.eu/institutions/lu-002885

Thansj Annette. I appreciate the suggestions and the link. I have researched using some of the suggestions you recommended. No one has been able yet to identify it. Someone thought it might be a Band uniform.
Will keep digging for the answer.
Regards,
Joan
