    Dear Group,

I am grateful to you for helping me and for having a "template" for these documents. This doc was a bit challenging because some words are new to me. ON the 4th line after Oost-Vlaanderen ( zigge zeige zeyde ?? ) ambtenaer( civil servant). Also the first name of the second witnesses ( I see Jaccobus?) and his occupation ( kams laeger, burger?). I did look at the other entries to help me, and used all the tools I know to make out these words. You help would be most appreciated. Carla. Birth record for Seraphina Stevens, entry 32 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S7WX-98WX-49?i=111&cc=2138513&cat=351963

      @carla ratcliff

The first term is "zegge", it means , We say..We said,it is said...like in the Flemish

saying "zegge en schrijve' , " we said and wrote, we say and write.

I think i would read for the witness, Jacobus Degrest.

Kamslaeger or kamslager ; well , before a yarn is rolled onto a beam to load it into the loom; the wool of the sheep is combed in order to declog and arrange the filaments

in such a way that they are aligned, and then it becomes easy to spin the yarn very solid in a regular twisting pattern.

So , a Kamslager is the man who makes and sharpens the combs for that.

The recurrent names of the witnesses.

People were poor , unemployed and awaiting any opportunity in the cafe's around the communityhouses. They were payed to be a witness, and for this reason, you will find the same ones 3 out of 4 times; When one of these was absent, or co-signing something else, a great many times the "Veldwachter" was summoned to be a witness,as he was most of the time within reach of the mayor.

So the name of the witness from your example,... watch the other entry's back and forth.

The reason i do mention that, after a pattern like that is recognised, it becomes very easy to fill in the bad reads of other entry's

It is a template within a template, and not the only one.

I'm at spitting distance from the water here, and we have a nice forest, and we are also very lucky not to have a lot of

mosquitos; but the forest mites can bite very nasty.Probably next week we will also gear up for night fishing (eel)

And we will have lots of fun..and food and beer.

The translation is so good and crisp, that it does not need correction, ...

I would suggest , however not to translate Arrondisement to borough; it is not the same.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrondissement

It represents a voting area , a judicial area, or a geographical area , but it depends on the location.

Waaraen , modern spelling 'waaraan' => to which , to whom

Almost flawless, and very remarkable that you made such an improvement.

Thanks to your patience, guidance and encouragement I continue to grow and improve. Can I just leave the word arrondissement in the translation then? I did read the article.

I hope you had a great day,

      Carla

When the term "zegge" is used, it means that the clerck made an error. As example one writes a name Josephus, zegge Jacobus, means that Josephus is wrong, and it should be Jacobus. So be carefull to read the whole record, before using the data in your Family Tree.💓

Gilbert, in this case it came before the name of the mayor/Clerck

and no other name was given, so because it would not percolate to the possible trees, as not related to familynames of that trees,

i did not mention that possibility; but your point is valid and

      important to mention.
